I got a call late last night confirming that my 30-day long term substitute job was going to end a week early since the teacher I was replacing was able to return earlier. Unfortunately the “call” came in but no one cancelled my job in the system alerting the system of my new availability. It was already after the time of robocalls but I quickly logged in and cancelled the job.
As I write this, it is shortly after 5AM on a Monday morning. I am hopeful that I will get a call sometime in the next two hours for a substitute teaching job at one of the areas Middle or High Schools. If all else comes to naught I am considering putting to test the theory that Jefferson High School really does have openings everyday and will show up at JHS before classes start to see if they do have a need. Of course the phone call will be appreciated so I am not chasing around the County.
The past job…
I have already posted a number of comments since starting the long-term job teaching Science at Washington High School. When I started the job I joked that by the time I started memorizing names of the kids that it would be time to leave. Ironically I achieved this last Friday which did turn out to be the last day. I guess it makes a lot of sense too since this week is all about preparation for final exams which I was not expected to complete as my term was to end on Friday, a few days before graduation and the end of examinations.
I am saddened though. I really thought I was able to teach the kids in our time together and began to get to know some of the kids in our conversations, conversations that always started from them. It gave me a clear sense of being trusted and I wanted to keep that trust and do all I could to encourage them positively.
I have to admit that I felt deeply offended (perhaps not a mature reaction) to comments made by one of the students over my writing this blog. Not sure why the comments of a 17-year old would cause me to actually add a new page to the blog TO STUDENTS, but it did. She was a member of the Teacher’s Posse I wrote about earlier. Perhaps this combination brought out a negative feeling I have toward the concept. As I mentioned in my article about the Teacher Posses, I never experienced them before and can’t relate now. Perhaps I would if I were a coach at the school.
My going away gift?
UNTIL MY NEXT OPPORTUNITY and EXPERIENCE… More to come!
